PATTERN will run for 4 years and will offer a 3-year training program for 16 Doctoral Candidates (DCs)
A personalized approach to the training. After being recruited, each DC will conduct an individual self-assessment under the guidance of the consortium members to identify the expertise, skills, and competences that s/he needs to develop for the successful completion of the research project and their professional career. Each DC will have a Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP) to be regularly reviewed and adapted when necessary. All the DCs will enroll in the training programs of the mutually recognized doctoral schools of the Beneficiaries of PATTERN. The training is structured into 3 different tracks, which will be tailored to the needs of each DC.
Training through Research
Training in Scientific Expertise and Technology
Training skills for the Jobs of Tomorrow
The skills that a DC develops while undertaking a 3-year project are critical to a successful career in science or any professional employment. The DC will be charged with having to go beyond what is currently known, and by interacting with her/his supervisors, she/he will learn and apply the required steps to advance the scientific state of the art. The training-through-research track has specific milestones that each DC must reach:
– To publish in an international, peer-reviewed journal (as first author).
– To attend international scientific conferences, with active participation (oral or poster presentation).
– To attend seminars or lectures by guest speakers.
– To be involved in teaching activities, following the rules of the associated doctoral school.
– To present their findings at the PATTERN Network-Wide Events and their annual progress reports to the doctoral school.
– Each DC is responsible for her/his own scientific deliverable.
Any of the DCs can take part in any of the training elements offered by PATTERN’s Participants, providing it is in accordance with their individual Personal Career Development Plans.
In PATTERN every DC will perform secondments at other consortium parties. Each DC will work in the receiving organization in close collaboration with an identified scientific expert.
As skills have shifted over the past decade, the PATTERN consortium’s emphasis is on underpinning the DCs’ careers by encouraging them to develop the skills required for the jobs of tomorrow.
Training to foster these skills are provided in all the doctoral schools of the academic Beneficiaries. TUE and KUL have proven records in translating knowledge into business.
PATTERN Unique Training
During the project, the consortium will organize trainings, special sessions and workshops at international conferences to draw attention to the PATTERN project and transfer knowledge between other groups of active researchers, including ITNs and a DN in related subjects. All the DCs will be encouraged to organize the workshops together, to enrich their complementary skills: composing a programme, inviting speakers, working within budget constraints, etc. The DCs will learn from other researchers, but they will also present, discuss, and defend their results in front of international experts. In addition to the DCs’ progress presentations, the innovative group training of PATTERN is carefully design to ensure complementarity with the DCs’ individual training.
